Fairfield, located in Essex County, New Jersey, has a history that dates back to its settlement by the Dutch. Originally known as Gansegat, the area later became part of Horse Neck and Newark Township. On February 16, 1798, Caldwell Township was formed from portions of Acquackanonk Township and Newark Township. It was named after Reverend James Caldwell and was one of the state’s original 104 townships. Over time, portions of Caldwell Township were used to create other municipalities, including Livingston, West Orange (formerly Fairmount Township), Caldwell borough, Verona Township (which now includes Cedar Grove), North Caldwell, Essex Fells, and West Caldwell. On November 6, 1963, Caldwell Township was renamed Fairfield Township, and it was later reincorporated as a borough on June 8, 1964.
According to the 2010 census, Fairfield had a population of 7,466 people residing in 2,645 households. The township had a population density of 725.1 per square mile. The racial makeup of Fairfield was predominantly White (94.84%), followed by Asian (2.53%), Black or African American (0.68%), Native American (0.28%), and other races. Hispanic or Latino individuals made up 5.14% of the population.
